Claire & Paul – Just Because

Claire just so happens to be an amazing photographer herself so when she asked me to photograph her and her handsome hubby Paul, I’m not going to lie I was honored and nervous.

Needless to say – after the shoot started, my nerves settled down and I think we got some awesome shots.

Thank you for asking ME out of the sea of photographers, ME to photograph you. I’m so honored. I hope you love them as much as I do. I think it’s always important to take pictures with the one you love, EVEN AFTER THE WEDDING!!! I hope we do this year after year.

The Bridges of Madison County – A surprise engagement

For those of you who have seen the movie “The Bridges of Madison County” you know that it’s beautiful love story. For those of you have never seen it (ahheemmm my husband) I think it’s definitely a Friday night renter (especially if you want brownie points by the Ms.). A few months ago I received an email from a man named Brian Higgins. Although we had never spoke person to person, I knew he was the boyfriend of my good friend and talented makeup artist/stylist, Sharla, who lives in Nashville, TN. For obvious reason, we’ve never met face to face but I knew after this email, that all that would change very very soon. The email went something like this…I want to propose to Sharla on the the Roseman Bridge (the famous one in the movie) in Winterset, IA and I want you to be there and photograph it. After the proposal, I’m going to take her to Northside Cafe (the one in the movie) and her WHOLE family will be there to surprise her. Hold on, let me think about this for a minute…UM HECK YEAH!!!!

Fast forward February 12, 2011 Jake and I arrived in Winterset, IA. Here was the plan…Bob, the awesome tourist guide, was meeting Jake and I at the Northside Cafe. We would then hop in his car, he’d take us to the Bridge (so we’d know how to get there) and then we’d plot out how everything was going to go down. I was going to be in FULL disguise because remember – she can’t know it’s me. Bob was going to take Brian and Sharla on a tour of all the covered bridges and other tourist attractions that day and the last stop was going to be the Roseman Bridge, that’s where he was going to propose. Where was I going to stand? What should we say for her to actually see the note that Brian wrote for her? What if she knows it me? What if she catches on? Needless to say, my nerves were shot.

Fast forward four hours 1:00 pm. Bob was going to call my cell phone and when he did, I knew we had 20 minutes before they arrived at the bridge. The phone rang!! Jake and I go into “Operation Bridge Proposal”. I get my wig on, my stocking hat, my black jacket and my scarf. I pin his proposal on the wall of the bridge and now – I have to act like a tourist taking pictures of the bridge…I can do this….

The Roseman Bridge

I see her walk up to the bridge and my heart is racing. My hands shaking…I can hear Bob talk about people photographing the bridge all the time and Sharla say, “hey look someone is doing it over there” (yeah..me). Then he talks about how people have left thousands of notes, signatures all over the bridge. Bob proceeds to say “Hey look at that one – that note is dated today!” “You should read it.”

The inside said:

This kind of certainty comes but once in a lifetime,

If you would like to be my wife,

When the white moths are on the wing,

Turn around and accept this ring.

Aww yeah..it’s happening!!!!

Remember – this whole time – she doesn’t know it’s me photographing her, she thinks I’m just some girl shooting the bridge…

But it was time for me to reveal who I really was…..I think I surprised her…just a little…. (sorry Sharla don’t kill me for posting this picture – it’s priceless)

then she looks over and see Jake (if you know Sharla – this is her saying…JAAAAKKKKEE in her southern accent LOVE IT!)

After the tears were shed, and the makeup was fixed, we had a quick mini session on the bridge.

This is the exact spot that Meryl Streep leaned against…couldn’t resist…

(Yes those are her real eyes…ridic)

Then we headed over to the Northside Cafe where Sharla thought she was meeting Jake and I for lunch. The Cafe put up this sign…for those of you who’ve watched the movie…you’ll understand what this means.

How awesome is this…her whole family hid in the booths with menus covering their faces….

She was soooo surprised!!!

To make the most of our trip, the next day we hit a few more bridges from the movie and took some more pictures…

Sharla – I hope your engagement was everything you could dream of and more. Brian is an amazing man and you are lucky to have found each other. I’m glad Jake and I were able to be there and share in this amazing experience with you. I love you.

Fact: I love Lindsay’s smile…it’s very genuine and beautiful.

Brie and Scott (BRIWI)+ Engagement Session

Fact: Brie and Scott are two of the sweetest people I know.

Fact: Scott is from New Zealand and has one of the coolest accents EVER!!!

Fact: I met Brie while she was doing her bridesmaids duties for another amazing bride of mine, Lindsay.

Fact: They met at a Happy Hour

Fact: BRIWI is the nickname given them from their friends (kinda like TomKat)

I just shot their wedding a week ago and I can’t wait to share those images. You think these are fun….WATCH OUT!!!

Kristin & Anthony Engagement Session

On an extraordinarily beautiful day I had the wonderful opportunity to shoot Kristin and Anthony, AMAZING doesn’t even describe it. Let’s just say I fell in love with not only these two but also a man called Christian Louboutin.

Jenna & Josh

It’s rare in Kansas City that you get to photograph anyone on a perfect day. You know what I’m talking about -the kind of day where it’s not too windy, not too cold, not to hot, not too cloudy, not to wet, not too humid…yeah you get the idea. Well – I was lucky and happened to have Jenna and Josh’s engagement session on that particular day. It was a perfect day – with two perfect people. You add that all up and it looks something like this…. Perfect day+Jenna and Josh (amazing clients/new family members) = ONE HAPPY PHOTOGAPHER!!

As my friend BBMK says….WACKI Heather strikes again!!

Check out his shoulder in this picture…this butterfly was literally OBSESSED with Josh’s shirt. YEAH…PERFECT DAY!! You feelin me now??!!

I’m sorry Jenna you are so freakin beautiful! I think she looks like Kelly McGillis from Top Gun. Do you?
